Being stressed is an unpleasant experience but the mental anguish can also lead to a slew of medical problems. Stress has long been associated with medical issues including, but not limited to, stomach ailments, headache, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, depression, insomnia, eye problems and skin breakouts. The mental anguish is also associated with increase the chance of developing dental problems.

When a person is under stress, their body will automatically respond to the stimulus causing the aggregation. The response is purely physiology and can negative impact a person’s internal balance. The condition can stimulate the production of certain chemicals in the body or behaviors that are not necessarily going to have a positive impact on one’s health. Some dental related side effects of stress include:

  • Mouth Sores: A person under duress may start to naturally produce higher levels of bacteria and become more susceptible to viruses. The over all imbalance make a person tired, trigger off allergies and may increase complications associated with the immune system, including mouth sores.
  • Gum Disease: People under stress do not behave as they normally would and not valuing their dental health may become less of a priority during trying times. Dental neglect may seem innocent enough, but the reality is that neglected teeth are more vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Temporo-Mandibular Joint: TMJ is a condition where a person’s lower jaw moves up, down and sideways and certain behaviors such as gum chewing may make it worse. Stress is also a major contributor to the affliction as when under duress, people make absentmindedly clench their jaws and grind their teeth. Clenching and grinding can put additional wear and tear on the teeth and can actually damage existing dental work to a point of disrepair.

If stress is destroying both your psyche and your smile, then taking the necessary precautions are essential. Stress sufferers have to find a healthy way of alleviating the pressure. Physical exertion, breathing deeply, meditation and yoga are all are excellent relaxation techniques. Additionally, it is imperative not to neglect your rudimentary oral hygiene of brushing and flossing and to make the time to get a dental check up.
